You should change to cfl lamps,anyway and if the mrs. has a car,practice hooking up jumper cables to the batteries to keep the batteries charged.

My windfall has turned into a deadfall. The damage to the batteries was more than cosmetic. A closer examination showed electrolyte seepage. The batteries went to the recycler. The info here (thanks to all) and other research I've done shows that an EE could spend a career on battery design and application. Much more to it than I realized.
