They are very good for quick scans of say panel/circuit breakers. You can also use them for quick check of terminations. They are not the end all, but they are good to get an idea if there are hot locations. The price on them is right. I carry one for quick checks all the time. You have to see the electricians face when I pull out some of my noncontact gadgets...as well as the camera.

I use a Raytek MX4+. I use it to check temps on all sorts of things....motors, transformers, panels. I have two customers who have me do a walk-though in their facilities to document themps on various things. Connect it to my laptop & download. After several months, I build a database that reveals when things are getting too warm, and their maintenance staff takes it from there.... preventative maintenance prevents downtime.

Checking for loose connections at starters, CBs etc. Remember to compare apples to apples.

Used one today to set modulating gas valves on a twin grain dryer system.

Scan an operating slimline to see which half the ballast is in.

Tease the neighbors cat with the laser pointer.

They're fun.

Especially when I stand out by the street wearing my dark blue work pants and shirt and point it towards the speeding punks with their thumping stereos as the come screaming down the street. Slows 'em down real fast, and the radios seem to get turned down.

my raytek is not down-loadable to the computer.. I use it regularly to check all kinds of stuff and it is just cool to see the little red lite kind of like a infred scope freaks people out..I use it on heating stuff and terminal and connections regularly..
