IRC and the NEC

So what is the current view of the 2 codes? How are the different areas of the nation handleing this?

I just built a new home in Shawnee, KS and they are using the IRC for 1 & 2 family dwellings. They are using the 2002 NEC for all other structures.
I have not spent much time with the IRC though since most of the stuff I do at work deals with the NEC.
