Not true. Let me put it like this. The word equipment is not unit specific, i.e. it is inclusive of any number of units. It is neither singular or plural as a word. Please refer to any dictionary to verify. I have never seen a dictionary specify singular and plural forms of the word.
Since the rule can be read as having two different meanings, the rule needs interpretation.
 

Gets more complicated with "y'all". The spoken word is obvious by grouping; the written word vague even if you understand dialects and there is context. :D

"You" is usually singular.

Had to look up the exact definition of equipment. I'd call it singular in most cases, except where it is used as a synonym for a plural, like "tools".

In most if not all southern dialects of English that use "y'all" it is singular. The plural form is "all y'all".
