I am installing a pool and have used EMT as an Electrical Conduit from the house to an above ground pool. It is buried 18 inches in the ground. I have been told by an electrical inspector that this is not considered an intermediate conduit and not to code. Can I use EMT as an Intermediate Conduit or not. It seems like it is a 'gray' area in the NEC. If someone sees this please let me know. Thank you.

The inspector is correct, there is no gray area.

RMC is Rigid Metal Conduit

RNC is Rigid Non-metallic Conduit

IMC is Intermediate Metal Conduit

But EMT is Electrical Metallic Tubing

Tubing is not Conduit.

Considering you, your families and your friends safety is in the balance you should hire a electrician to do this work.

Try reading the definition of a raceway. Especially the second sentence.

You lost me. :-?

Raceways include pretty much everything.

Conduits and Tubings are both examples of raceways.

Then you got it.

All sedans are vehicles, but not all vehicles are sedans.
All Americans are human beings, but not all human beings are Americans.
All Macs are PCs, but not all PCs are Macs.

Ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

"Raceways" is an all-encompassing term. "Conduits" and "Tubing" are smaller groups within that 'family' of raceways.

I'm sure the OP will hire an Electrian now, after that fine display of defining

what a pipe is called. Was that the important message , or was it that this

guy should not be wiring a swimming pool ?

I know, If you don't like it don't read it. I guess it's my problem !

A square is a rectangle. But a rectangle is not a square.
An electrician is a network cable installer. But a network cable installer is not an electrician.

Remember ,..a square is a polygon

Smiller24, you really should hire an electrician for this.
