Is it acceptable to use wire nuts in the service panel?

When installing an auto-transfer generator, per nec, is it acceptable to use wire nuts in the service panel, to make circuit connections to the new generator transfer panel?

Yes, not a problem at all.

Yes-- read art. 312.8 but don't stop at the first sentence. ;)
 
Yes.

It is easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle than it is to violate the code section (312.8) that addresses splices in gutter space in your average residential load center.

I meant it!..... The God Bless too! The inspector told us we were using the service panel as a JB. "a clear violation" So thanks for the code help.
