IMO with Big Blue and Big O, its really hard for Code enforcement to keep up.

Blaming Lowes and HD for shoddy electrical work is akin to blaming McDonalds because people are fat or gun manufacturers for gunshot deaths.

Unless you are talking about the installation service that both of those stores offer, the bottom line is that DIY has always been around and will stay that way whether we like it or not. I'm a DIY with other trades and I'm quite happy to have big box stores at my disposal for the projects that I do.

Ok Peter, you are twisting my statement....Im not blaming Lowes and HD for anything....I simply said with so many homeowners doing work with a vast supply of materials available, its hard for inspectors to no where all of the projects are.

you say that as if it is a bad thing? maybe it is from your perspective, but for the vast majority of people out there, they don't want to pay for permits and inspections, and they sure as heck do not want to pay the extra real estate taxes that getting permits and inspections brings.

I'm not twisting your statement at all. You stated a cause-effect relationship. The cause is HD/Lowes and the effect is unpermitted/unispected work. Therefore, the blame lies with those stores for making DIY easy. I can't believe I actually have to justify this.

Well alright, you certainly have a right to your opinion......seems like like youve got a bur under your saddle.............:)

Perhaps the building department could set up a permit desk in the electrical section. Save them time going to get the permits. And offer them a discount or no payment for 6 months.

Yep, It's all over our town also.......IMO with Big Blue and Big O, its really hard for Code enforcement to keep up. I lost a job a while back because of a 200 service drop that was inches from the ridge of a un-inspected sun room addition....I wanted to update the service and they couldnt afford to do that also........

Ok, again, I'll word this another way....the intent of the statement, was that with the vast availability of materials 24/7, there are so many weekend construction projects that its hard for code enforcment to ensure everything is permited/inspected that supposed to be......Im not blaming any big box store....nor implying that they "set up a permit booth" anywhere..
:):-?

I never do any work without a permit. I get it from my wife.
Do any of you really believe permits are pulled for remodels if the electrical service does not need upgraded ? I see major remodels and store build outs all the time with no permits.

Here you would never get away with a store buildout without permits.

Happens ALL THE TIME here! Especially restaurants..... Unless there was not one there before - big red flag when the shoe shop becomes a cafe. Retail to retail, and restaurant to restaurant, unless you are ratted out, or an Inspector stumbles into an wide open door after the inspection across the street - it is otherwise 'no-holds-barred'!

The realtor will even pre-paper the windows to disguise any TI action inside. And the building owner will even put the "notice of non-responsibility" in the least likely place to be seen or read.

I see it around here all the time. Paper up the windows of a closed store. A few months later you see a new store open up. All the while a few construction type pickup trucks out in the parking lot.

Mostly you are dealing with non-loading bearing walls and minor rewiring and replumbing. The only one really being hurt is the government not getting its fees and increased property taxes. It is hard for me to feel sorry for the government not getting its fees and property taxes.
