Getting involved in my first island kitchen counter/cabinets. Little confused on whether the required receptacle has to be GFI protected. This receptacle will obviously be installed on one side of the island, and below the counter top.

Iwire - I should have known that. Do you typically have the carpenter cut the opening in the cabinet, when you're installing a receptacle in a situation like this?

Thanks

I don't, but only because I have yet to have a carpenter cut me a box in and have it fit first try... I always have to enlarge the opening, and that is always SO much fun....

Mark your receptacle and make sure you score the outline with a razor knife or a sharp knife. This will keep the wood from splitting. The cabinet installers use painters tape as the outline. Be very careful not to slip and cut too far.

I then drill a hole in the corners-- at least in opposite corners then , believe it or not, I use a sawzall. Use a fine tooth blade. Never had a problem.

Sometimes when the cabinet guy or builders see you with the sawzall they will offer to cut it for you.

Never let somebody else cut the hole! I use a rotozip. No chance of chipping the finish.

If I saw you with a sawzall about to cut into new cabinets I would offer to cut it for you too. What are you a plumber?? ;)

Rotozip is the preference here. I have used the sawzall, and it does the job, but there is a greater chance for splitting, just run it slow. My only fear with the Rotozip, is at 30,000 rpms, it likes to run.

We always use a carpenters tool, a Bosch, barrel grip, jig saw.
I recommend applying a piece of self-adhesive felt to the shoe of a jigsaw to protect the finish of the cabinetry.

Is that one of those fancy vibrate type saws ??? if it is how much did it cost?
The fein saw use to cost about $400.00 but they have come down in price to about $300.00 And yes they are the vibrating saws. They are very nice--
