Yeah buy a code book and see 210.52(C)(2) and (5) thats my answer.
LOL, reminds me of why my friend won't post here, "Their not reading the Book", why should I answer their question, its in the book!"...

I try and address this on most every job during rough-in/walk-thru. I will ask what type of island or peninsula they are considering so they will know that if there is a backsplash, that is where a receptacle will be, or the required heights otherwise. There is almost always a fuss (usually minimal, but almost always a fuss  ) and sometimes it is not resolved until the end, but before inspection. If an inspector wants to sign off on it, so be it, but I am not making holes for something I know will not pass.

Securing the drawer front and installing a receptacle there has become quite common.

I have had the cabinet maker shorten a drawer to make room, also. It doesn't take much.

The answer is fairly simply, you tell the GC / Homeowner / Architect, etc that you will be back when they have a place to put a receptacle that meets code.

The code still applies even when it's a pain in the rear.

Very well said. I congratulate the inspector. I have a no tolerance attitude for this violation.

One day the GC/ Homeowner/Architect, and may I add the electrical contractor will wise up to the requirement.

This is not new,but if the inspectors continue to close there eyes to it, there will be someone injured by cords hanging from the counter top.

IMO, its a hazard to have one to begin with, and I believe this graphic is poking fun at the requirement.

I am surprised there has not been lawsuits over this. The idea behind the receptacle is good but it creates a hazard just as big as the one it was to prevent.I would rather see a hole thru the counter top so some rug rat doesnt get killed or hurt.

Serious question (hey, it's possible!): Is there a difference between an island and a stationary table?

They do make a Listed pop-up receptacle that sells for about $125.00. Mounts flush with the countertop and pops up exposing a duplex receptacle mounted horizontally and meets this code requirement.

If it is a serious question  then I suspect if it is stationary then it is an island.

Yes but most wont pull an electric skillet or coffee maker on them.
No but they may pull a lamp on them or grab both prongs when they are pulling it out.

I think they will survive the lamp lot better than hot grease. We do not need nec to add hazards.I thought they were about making things safer. All i am saying is it might be better not having this outlet.

So put in a proposal.

By the way, fryers come with cords that disconnect from the fryer when pulled for this very reason.

Not older ones. And the newer ones you need to hang on to the fryer to disconnect them... something li'l chitlins can't do when it's up on the c-top.

Who's the manufactuer? I have heard about a law suit regarding this subject from a home I was doing for a lawyer. He didn't want the outlet installed. That was a fun discussion.

It seems to me that the requirement for a receptacle is to prevent someone from running a extension cord from the kitchen counter to the island.Bet no one would ever do that, wow what a dreamer I am.

How about we do what we can, and people can start being accountable for what happens in their homes instead of blaming me, you, inspectors, and the NEC for their accidents. Livin' a pipe dream, I know.
