A question has arisen on Information Technology equipment to be installed on a computer room raised floor of our data center.
The equipment manufacturer states that his equipment is LISTED. He further states that "listed, by NEC definitions (Article 100) means that an approved testing organization has reviewed the equipment and cord (if a corded device) and it meets the requirements for the intended usage." The cord to his equipment extends less than 15 feet from his equipment and is UL 64 wire "Flexible Power Cordage".
The 1999 NEC 645-5d (5) states that cables other than covered by NEC 645-5d (2) should be listed as type DP cable and have adequate fire-resistant characteristics suitable for use under raised floors of an Information Technology room.
The local building inspector has casually mentioned to our lead electrician to make sure that cords under the raised floor are properly rated.
Our question is two-fold:
1. Since the total equipment package is listed, is it acceptable to install the cord under the raised floor even if the cord appears to be a standard SOOW cord? The cord is labeled UL water-resistant SOOW CSA(-40 degrees C) FT-2 P-7K 123033 MSHA 600V.
2. Do power "extension" cords in general have to meet the requirements of DP labelling and fire-resistant characteristics suitable for underfloor usage (ANSI/UL 1581-1991)?
