Re: It Never Ceases To Amaze Me

Hi Jeff,

You're absolutely right. This has never been inspected. It's near the U of M right on the river.

The thinking, loosely called "thinking", that resulted in this is in the realm of folly. I'll get two more snaps tomorrow.

It's almost that good.

The yellow 12/2 goes downstream to feed a builtin ironing board. After building the box, to get the EGC, the bare was run off around the corner to another NM & plastic box on another circuit that had a "working" EGC.

The 1958 TW & 1/2" flex shown goes up to a wall sconce. After getting a "real" EGC with the bare copper, the wall sconce was left floating. The Truth-In-Sale-Of-Housing inspections evidently didn't note this.

Here are two more pics:

The first was behind a single gang plaster ring. I particularly like the long, thin shaving of cable sheath hanging in the box:

And this is how the home runs enter the panel:

If any of my crew did something of that nature thet be flipping hamburgers for a living.

Re: It Never Ceases To Amaze Me

I don't think there's any question that this is the work of a completely clueless, DIYer. It's doubtful even a totally clueless homeowner would pay for this work.

Re: It Never Ceases To Amaze Me

At least, in the picture of the J-box above, someone has attempted to tie the romex in a knot to avoid it from being pulled out of the box. :D

The sad truth is.... this type of work is why when you watch the news fires are, it seems, 90% of the time attributed to electrical origins.

Re: It Never Ceases To Amaze Me

Don't believe the news or the fire investigators. They're all "perfect" forensic detectives who ALWAYS seen to be able to figure out what caused EVERY fire. Uncanny, isn't it?

Just about every fire that isn't obviously caused by arson or some other obvious cause is blamed on electrical.

"Was there a heater in the bedroom?" "Yes, there was." "Well the heater must've caused it..."

Re: It Never Ceases To Amaze Me

Al hildenbrand, what's the story behind these photos? Seeing how incredibly amature that second picture is, I'm amazed anything works. Are you just in the process of opening all the j-boxes looking for additional problems?

-John

Edit: To be clear, I don't mean the photos are amature, I mean the work in the photos is amature. :D
