I have been called to look into a ceiling fan that has a rather loud hum. When I started looking into this I have found that the fan/light is wired with a two wire and both are being controlled by a single dimmer/fan control.

I've seen some posts that talk about ways that allow the use of a fan speed control and a dimmer for the lights using the current wiring.

I would like to know if anyone would help point me in the right direction for the product I need.

Any help will be appreciated.

Norb, just buy one of those remote kits that allow separate fan/light control. They also have wall switches that work with them.

There is a module that fits up in the fan canopy and a hand held remote that will allow sepaarte dimming and fan control.. As I said they also make a wall control for them.

There's also similar devices that don't use RF signals, but digital signals on the hard-wiring. The module is still placed in the canopy to recieve the signals and control the fan & light, but the other end installs like an ordinary switch.

Years ago when these were new I had to install about 8 fans in a house. When I was done I started testing and the ho says "How come my fan and lights are all going on and off." I should have realized they were RF and a dip switch setting needed to be set for each unit. The module was built into the fan and I had to take the fan down to set the switch. PITA

the noise is probably due to the following:

1) a light dimmer used to control the fan speed....

2) probably a variable speed control as well...fans always worked better with 3-speed controls...always less noise...

Try this Lutron page for the electronic fan controls that don't hum. I have the fan/light combo unit in my bedroom and it only requires a 14/2 between the switch and the fan. I'm assuming the module that goes in the fan canopy is a PWM unit which is why they don't hum.

Thanks to all.

I have installed quite a few of the remotes before. I guess I should have been a little more specific in my first post. I am looking for the digital type that mounts in a wall box.

I would like to get away from the RF remote if at all possible.

I still look forward to more replies.
