If you were attaching 4" RGS elbow to 4" PVC would you:
1. Put a coupling on the RGS and use a PVC male adapter?
2. Put a female adapter on the pvc and screw the RGS elbow on to that?
 
I have seen people hammer a "bell end" of 4" PVC onto the threads of a rigid 90. The belled end is considerably longer than what you would get with a coupling, but I've never known it to be an acceptable practice. I've always done choice #2.

Neither 1 or 2. A 4" RMC elbow is over 35 pounds, 3½ feet long, and just an outright pain in the butt to try to spin onto a PVC adapter. We thread the adapters onto the elbows then apply some glue and just slide the adapter/elbow combo onto the pipe.

Easiest and simplest way to go about it.

Of course, plus you're more likely to end up with the elbow aimed correctly with the connection tight.

I didn't take the order of assembly literally when I answered.

That is the method used by our utility for pole risers after we have installed the first section of rigid running out of the ground.

I don't follow exactly. So you have straight length of PVC connecting to RGS elbow. You thread adapter onto one end of the RGS elbow and how does it attach to the PVC ????? Sorry thanks.

The adaptor on post #9 just thread it on to your RGS threads and glue non-belled in of your pvc into it.

I typically put glue in the threads to as it goes on the steel conduit better.
