Ok....this is probobaly gonna stir the pot....oh well.....

THIS POST IS NOT INTENDED FOR UNION VS. NONUNION DISCUSSION....IT IS SIMPLY A FACT FINDING MISSION FOR MYSELF AS AN ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR....MOD.'S, PLEASE LEAVE THREAD OPEN....POSTER'S....PLEASE DONT GET MY THREAD CLOSED!!:D

This question is for JW's and EC's, Non Union....I know what the Union payscales are....

I am curious as to what the common pay scale is for a nonunion JW electrician. This would be a JW whom is capable of working on their own, running small jobs.

I am in southwest Ohio, and union scale for local area is $26.20 wages, $4.30 Pension, $4.50 Health & Welfare. $35.50 Total package + JATC 1.5% gross + NEBF 3% gross + NLMCC + LMCC + HECAF

I would just like to know what JW's are making....we have some decisions to make soon....and I need some information>>>>

I like this poster already. There are a lot of apprentices that work on their own independently and make good bucks under the table. Doing the job to code is another question. Maybe that is what should be added to the question. Pay scales are really varied. Definitely a question that should stay in Ohio...without offense. rbj

Well....anyone working on ANY of MY JOBS at ANY TIME EVER will be installing ALL electrical work TO CODE. I DO NOT skimp when building my installations....Just curious what the JW's working on the other side of the fence typically earn....

The non-union employee is representing him(her)self. Your pay is based on performance, but is also determined on how well the employee represents themselves.

I was working for $17.50/hour in 1990 in Norfolk, VA. In Wilmington, NC you can get a pretty good guy for that same $17.50/hour. Better companies have holidays (about 7 per year), vacation, group health, some training.

It's my understanding towards Raleigh, NC the wages are higher.

In our area it varies from employer to employer the rates fall between 10-20 dollars per hour. This is mainly for residential work and we are a no licsense state so anybody who can twist wires can do electric work.

As some one who doesn't inderstand all of the abbrevations above, what is the take home wage per hour as well as the benefits dollars per hour? It looks like medical insurance is paid as well?

Just curious -

Thanks

This seems like such a simple question to answer but there are so many levels of complication it quickly turns mired. The biggest issue is obviously location. The other thing is that often employers try to hold their cards close so as not to cause acrimony w/i the ranks. Then you have to consider direct wages vs fringe. And on and on.

I would say the average journeyman in the Denver area is in the middle 20's (24-26). Lead men get more, foremen more than that. There are at least 5 paid holidays, at least a weeks vacation, part of medical paid, a company vehicle and the larger guys will contribute to a retirement plan.

I don't know how to attribute dollar figures to the above. And obviously all of the above is negotiable and varies on a number of factors including size of shop, type of work etc.

Well I make $10.25 an hour plus my boss has to take me to lunch 1 day a week. I told him a while back that I had to have a truck to drive to and from work since mine got taken. He does let me drive a truck and all I have to do it put a tank of gas in it a week and pay the insurance. I told him by mid next year my goal is to be at $11.25 an hour. I am doing a job right now that someone said something about bacon wages or something. It is at a college near here. He tells me I am the best hand he has ever had and that goes a long ways for me.

I am in Raleigh and I just got my license in November. I was making 15 an hour before I got it. Haven't told my boss I got it though. He knew I was trying for it but he's never asked if I did. I'm sure he thinks I failed since most people do around here. I know he will not pay me the money i want to be the qualified individual plus he's a hack. I could go elsewhere and make more but the real intent is to go out on my own. SOON!!! Oh yeah my bennies include a whopping one week of vacation. Been there 4 years. Man I need a new job.

If it is a prevailing wage job, you must be paid that wage. You can check here for the required wage rate in your county. You must be paid the total package, both wages and benefits.

I'm sorry dude, but along with "being the hardest working man in the electrical trade" you are the poorest. Your boss has screwed you into happiness. It is nice of him though to let you pay the insurance on his truck. Every one likes a pat on the back some times but that doesn't pay the rent. I might be tired and I might be hungry but not at the same time.
