i use this electrican now and then if i need help running pipe or pulling wire.he cant keep a regular job cause he drinks a lot.he is one of those who thinks they know everything and theres nothing he hasnt done before.
he comes up with some really off the wall stuff every now and then.usually i just nod and go on or tell him where hes wrong.
today he was saying that you could not run regular current conductors in the same conduit as travelers for a 3 way switch.said the current running in different directions would cause the wires to over heat.i might sound stupid for asking this, but is there anything to that or is he just blowing smoke again?

It's not blowing smoke, it's more the Smoke Theory of Electricity. When the brain cell count gets low enough, the simplistic becomes magic.

The magnetic fields created by the opposing currents are opposite to each other. If the currents are equal in magnitude, the magnetic field sums to zero.

That doesn't cause heat.

That is exactly how drunks brain gets scrambled up. He knows enough to think that if there are three wires that carry current in a single phase system then one is an extra, without an accompanying return wire. What he does not realize that at any given time there is only one hot will cary current that is canceled by the neutral. (As somebody pointed out '0' flux.) But more importantly it would be only a problem IF it is run in EMT or other magnetizable material since it is the unballance of the magnetic flux - as the result of unbalanced current return - that causes the ehating effect.
