This is from a job today I inspected today. It doesn't look like it in the photo but there's plenty of free floor space in this attic. The plans call for a Unistrut support for the disconnect and require they provide NEC working space. Not to mention the cable. Is there a support group I can join?

What's wrong with it? This looks typical for around me. HVAC can't read the plans and don't care about the electrical code. HVAC reply is "What's unistrut?"

is there a good reason to not mount the disconnect on the hvac unit?

you are saying that it should have been installed on a standard floor mounted unistrut frame?
The plans called for it to be mounted to a Unistrut frame that's secured to the floor, but mounting it in any secure manner with NEC work space would have been acceptable to me. The nec work space and cable that's not secured was my primary concerns.
