What I do know: House, detached garage, functioning three way between House & Garage for lighting, 2 garage door opener receptacles (hot all of the time), three overhead lines from House to Garage.

What I don?t know: How are the receptacles ?hot? and functioning all of the time?
 
The Hot and Neutral are run on the travelers between the house and garage, the commons of both switches run to the fixture in the garage.

I have run into this before in an old farm house. Depending on which positions the 3-ways are in when the light is on determines the polarity of the fixture.
 
In this situation, the fixture could be turned off but still be "hot" when the nuetral is switched off. Crazy.
 
So, the receptacles in the Garage will have reversed polarity at least 1/2 of the time?

I thought this was how this was done but I was not sure.
 
I was looking over a job and this is something I will be working on. We are going to move the overhead too underground. When I do this I will straighten this mess out. I was planning on feeding the Garage and picking up the three way there.

Here I thought I had a handle on three ways. Right and wrong.

I think I have it now. I just needed to think out loud.

Its called a chicago or georgia 3 way.Works but not legal.Shell of light fixture would be hot and unsafe.Nothing surprises me in KY.But did manage to get a great wife from there.

Now your in a mess cause you know they wont pay to fix whats not broke.

Never heard of a Chicago 3 way but the one I saw was about 60 miles west of Chicago.
