Is it acceptible to put the Dishwasher and disposal on 1-120v 20 amp circuit and be within 2005 code? Inspector sad no but did not know the code reference. Both appliances FLC added together is 14.2 Amps.

I say that it is allowed. But the wording is not as clear as I could wish. Look at 210.23(A)(2). You have two items fastened in place, but not other item is on the same circuit. If there were, for example, a light on this same circuit, then the total of the two items fastened in place could not exceed 10 amps (i.e., 50% of the 20 amp circuit rating). But you don't have a light, or any other load, on the same circuit. So you fall back on the next, applicable, earlier stated requirement. You find that in the first sentence of 210.23. That sentence says you can't exceed a 20 amp load on this 20 amp circuit. You aren't. So you are good to go.

I agree with Charlie.

Since both items are fastened in place equipment and there are no other loads such as lighting units, cord and plug connected non-fastened in place equipment then as long as the combine load does not exceed 20 amps you are fine.

After doing it this way since the early 70's (20 amp for dw/disp) we have been questioned on two occaisions in the past month. Is it because dw/disp's are getting bigger or is it because work is getting slower?

BTW, there are 1 million houses here wired that way.

Also, in all my years of troubleshooting, I have not ONCE had an overload issue with a dw/disp circuit.

I agree also. Two items fastened in place are permitted on this circuit. Ask for a code reference of the violation.

I dont see it a violation either..but I do question the fastened into place senario..because both items are cord and plug connected..so how can a cord and plug connected item actually be classified as a fixed item..

:D

I have a slight problem with that as well. They need not be plug and cord connected. Mine are. They need not be on separate circuits. Mine are.

The dishwasher is held in place by gravity, not by any particular fasteners, though there are two screws that go into the countertop, and that keep the top of the DW from moving. Is that "fastened in place"? Could go either way. The disposal is certainly fastened in place.

you are assuming they are cord and plug connected but maybe they are hard wired. Personally in all my years wiring houses I've never seen a cord and plug connected dw/disp.

As I said earlier, my are. They were installed about three years ago. Stop by sometime. We must be fairly close to each other. You're in VA, and I'm in WA, and the V and W are only one letter apart. :D

Some of the higher end dishwasher ( I am thinking Bosch but not sure) come with cord and plug. You install a receptacle under the sink and the cord passes thru the cabinet and plugs in. No disco-- no laying on the floor to wire the dang dw. Disposals, on the other hand, I have never seen them come with cord and plug.

All the disposals that I have wire have the option of either hardwiring or using a appliance cord kit that they sell seperatly. I have always used a cord to connect disposals.

Sure there are appliance cords that can be installed on the units but I have never seen one that came out of the box with a cord and plug. I have with the Dishwasher-- factory done.

"Waste King" disposals come with a cord. Funny how excited I get when one of these shows up and I get to save a cord and 4 minutes of labor which of course is credited back to the customer. ;)

Same here.

has anyone else considered 110.3(B) Every thing now days is listed as needing its own circuit. Just for the record I used to run separate #12 circuits to each, then I was show the error of my ways , now it's a #14 MWBC to under the sink.

That must be the same company that makes disposals for the Sears Kenmore brand, because I hooked up a few a while back that had the cord factory installed.
