In a residence kitchen all counter top recp's are to be GFI protected but what about the refrigator recp. if it is next to the counter. Can it be a regular duplex receptacle?? If not do you have a code section.

Only receps that serve the c'top are required to be GFI-protected. 210.8(A)(6). If the recep is behind the fridge, 210.8(A)(6) does not apply.

210.8 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel.

(A) Dwelling Units. All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and
20-ampere receptacles installed in the locations specified in
(1) through (8) shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter
protection for personnel.

(6) Kitchens ? where the receptacles are installed to serve
the countertop surfaces

Your recept is installed to serve the ref., not the countertop.

I know the original poster is talking about a kitchen but....

One thing to keep in mind is that if a receptacle for a refrigerator is installed within 6 feet of a wet bar sink then the receptacle must be GFCI protected.

I get alot of upset people when I tell them this as they are use to not GFCI protecting a refrigerator.
