Watching a home improvement show as I type.

They are showing a kitchen island that has the receptacles hidden behind small doors on the face of the cabinet just under the counter top.

Code compliant?

The door has a notch cut out of it so you can close it with cords plugged in. That alone seems like a 400.8(3) violation.

Can the required receptacle outlets serving kitchen counters be hidden behind doors?

George keep it up and we will extinguish your tiki torch at the next tribal council. :D

Hi Bob,

Where run through doorways, windows, or similar openings
I don't think the opening you are describing would be covered. I don't believe it is a "simular" opening. They remind me of the kind that are in desk tops with plastic bushings in the holes for the cord to pass through.

I also think they would satisfy code for the required receptacle.

You didn't say whether or not the island met exeption (b) of 210.52(C)(5).

I think the exceptions could be applied.

210.52(C)(5) Exception: To comply with the conditions specified in (a) or (b), receptacle outlets shall be permitted to be mounted not more than 300 mm (12 in.) below the counter top. Receptacles mounted below a countertop in accordance with this exception shall not be located where the countertop extends more than 150 mm (6 in.) beyond its support base.
It was definitely within 12 in. below the counter top.

The counter top did not overhang the support base more than a couple of inches but the outlet was recessed inside the support base more than 6" from the counter top.

That is not really addressed though.

In one of the older editions of Practical Electric Wiring there was a suggestion for locating a 50 amp receptacle inside of a barn and building a dedicated hatch in the side of the barn to gain access from outside. This was essentially a homemade weatherproof when is use flush cover. This was before you could go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a 50 amp cover.

I don't know if 400.8 is a good call but around here as far as appliance garage's go the AHJ will use the hy-lighted below to say that these receptacles don't count as a required receptacle. Now how far can we cover them is a good question?

210.52 Dwelling Unit Receptacle Outlets.
This section provides requirements for 125-volt, 15- and 20-ampere receptacle outlets. Receptacle outlets required by this section shall be in addition to any receptacle that is part of a luminaire (lighting fixture) or appliance, located within cabinets or cupboards , or located more than 1.7 m (5? ft) above the floor.
