Kitchen Island

This is the situation. Resisential kitchen in new construction, everything is finished and contractor deceides to put an island in the kitchen. The kitchen is on a slab and there is no access to anything. Would you allow the island:-?

I would tell them we need electric out there if you install that island. If they build an island and make it portable then you wouldn't have to wire it , IMO

Either one I would call a piece of furniture-- it is not fixed to the structure then it does not need wiring, IMO.

How's things in DC-- my daughter is doing well there but complains of the cold.

D...I was teasing about the island... I agree a piece of furniture. It is cold up here. I am sick of it myself. However, come June we will be complaining it's too hot.....go figure. I hope she is doing ok otherwise. This is a very tough place to blend to. DC that is.

Choice is all yours ,live in snow country or florida. I made choice 36 years ago. Keep your cold weather. I live just as good without the snow. No state tax ,county tax,or high cost of heating. I live in 95% great days and other 5 still better than up north. If i need see snow i turn tv on. No way do i want to live up north but somebody gotta so let it be you LOL

For a professional looking result, I'd have to agree with Bill Dozier. Exactly how this would be done isn't a skill I've learned yet. Rule # One, If a customer wants it and a contractor knows it can be done, It's doable.

Rule # 2 Always make sure the person to do the work is qualified and certified within that skill set.

Rule # 3 Always do a professional job in compliance with the code and /or local codes.

#4 WHO IS PAYING FOR IT ? Nothing worth having is free, still paying for my wife 35 years later.
 
Sometimes you can nicely decorate a power pole ....... like in office furniture when it isn't adjacent to a wall and the client to too cheap to drill from the floor below.
I know every Architect on the board just cringed. :roll:

Yeah Jim I lived in Tallahassee 9 years ago loved the warm weather. But I'll take the cold for a bigger paycheck.....:D

This I don't understand,.. why would you document all the things that are not there?? There are a whole lot of things that could be added,.. It either meets the requirments at the time of inspection or it does not...
 
If it wasn't on the stamped prints or there on the final then its not your problem or the inspectors. If your concern is that GC installs after the final (he will) it might be wise to document it . A picture in the spot where it will sit along with newspaper that is 1 day older than final would be enough to cover you and put the GC in one costly mess. Or better yet ask the inspector to include this fact on his records. What could happen is a few years from now if house gets sold a sharp HI will tag it. That is when the problem becomes very real.

Go back to the OP.....it was mentioned. If I hear we might be doing this or that I simply document on my report pass the inspection go to the next inspection, etc. as an Inspector since 96' I have learned to document everything.......I am alergic to a court of law. Your thoughts?

If I thought that they would add an island later I would "not" even mention it. I sign off what's there or not there and move on.

A good lawyer will jump on any note's he see's. "if you thought that they would put in an island, why didn't you make them comply?"

It's much easier to say, "the job complied when I was there, if you would like I could go by and leave a notice of violation for work done without a permit."

Key word thought / assume.....John they mentioned it. Ok all I put on my report is island not installed at time of inspection.....what the heck is the big deal? We live in a very litagacious society, I / we here in DC cover our butts very well. All of our reports are done electronically and sent to the builders contractors before COB....They read them file them no biggy.....But if a HO or HI brings this crap up in the future then I / we are covered. I do not see why we on this thread are getting all bunched up on something so simple.... document and run.....It passed!

My thoughts are ,..that where I work there is very limited liability assumed by the municipalities ..

I as an EC,..do not document all the things that were not installed when I left nor do I document all the things in place if I'm adding wiring to an existing structure ..
