Kitchen receptacle over range

In an existing dwelling above the kitchen range is a 120 volt 15 amp receptacle. Was this a violation of the code 40 years ago. Is it a violation of the 2002 NEC.

It is not a violation to install a receptacle outlet on the wall space above a range. It would probably not be the best design however. It is also not a violation to install a receptacle directly behind a sink either.

I can't imagine this was an issue 40 years ago.

Is it a recessed recepticle? They were often installed in kitchens above ranges for wall mount clocks.

Many years ago electric clocks were 120V. I have installed recessed receptacles for kitchen wall clocks. You can always blank the receptacle off.
