anyone else tried one of the new klein digital clamp meters?

I bought the CL2000 yesterday but haven't used it other than opening it up and playing with the buttons.

Its got a lot of features for the price; couple other guys in town bought them and haven't said anything bad about it. I got to use it some a few weeks ago when a klein rep stopped by with demo units.

Here's a link if anyone is interested.

Just curious what anyone else thought about it if you've purchased it. I have a few more days to take it back if it turns out to be junk. I'm a little unsure about the shape of that clamp getting into tight spaces.

Larry,

I checked. It does not.

Unless there is a doppler effect sensor built it,
it never will measure DC amps with the clamp-on sensor coil. :)
Did you check close enough? Looks like to me it does. Could be a Hall-effect sensor.

the Hz is a nifty advantage over the one I primarily use now..... As is the MIN reading in addition to the MAX reading buttons ( I wonder if the MIN & MAX work on all settings, or only V, & A). Capacitance setting could be real useful too.

having separate AC & DC settings is a pain.... I very much enjoy the automatic detection of the one I use mostly now.

I very much enjoy use of the "FORK" type of meter vs. the CLAMP type, but I dunno if they make the FORK type above 100A yet.

If the majority of your work is < 400A it sounds like its worth a try (depending on cost). Often times I need a 600A or 1000A rated clamp meter.

Mivey, and LarryFine,
Yours are Good comments.

As I read it,
it senses pulsating DC, pulling in the varying current relative to zero,
and this is a useful measurement.

As I read it,
it sees pure DC levels as zero,
and has a graphic to this effect.
So, I expect, that measuring the voltage to my DC desk lamp,
it would see the turn on current shift and and then return to Zero.

This is an interesting MultiMeter.
Has lots of features.
Does not have a Big Rubber Box Case (bullet-proof).
Does have (unfortunately) Borrowabillity. (Others will like it also.)

I want to know the speed of the analog part of the display.
Will it show turn-on surge current for a HVAC
like my old-fashioned Analog Meter Clamp-on does ?
Or will it miss most of the peak?

Lots of qualified answers and opinions come from this group of guys.
Comments are always welcome. :)

Mivey and LarryFine,

I think you see measuring AMPS DC as being through the test leads.

I was refering to measuring AMPS DC through the Clamp-on.

On checking again, I DO NOT see a graphic depicting this operation clearly.

Thanks for the comments, however.
Experienced observations & opinions are almost as good as facts.

Where did you see that? Are we looking at the same meter? Is there some other documentation you've found? I only found the link I gave above.

It measures DC current through the clamp-on for >2 mA. The lead measurements are for below <2mA.

page 2, Instruction #1 for DC between 2mA and 400A ("AC / DC Current (large): < 400A"). The test lead example is page 2 Instruction #2 for <2mA ("AC / DC Current (small): < 2000μA")

I would choose fluke over anything klein made, or branded.

So you have experience with this product?

For those wondering, these meters just hit the shelves. They've been developing them for the past couple of years.

The only uncertainty so far, to me, is reliability since they have no previous experience in this.

They have more features for less money; to say flat out you would not use a product without trying it, and its built by a trusted manufacturer, is quite asinine. Fluke makes a nice meter, but they are not the only game in town.

It is not asinine, its my opinion. Fluke has a reputation for being top notch, whereas klein's quality gradually sucks more and more every year. Klein is no longer a trusted manufacturer for me.

I would never go cheap on a meter - now, THAT would be asinine.
