Re: KO punch

Just got off the phone with Greenlee.

I'm offering stainless steel options on the panels I'm quoting at marinas now. Greenlee stops at the 2" KO punch for stainless steel.

This brings up the question of how are y'all making the 3"-4" holes in stainless steel?

How many punches do you think a standard die will make?

How many hole saws will it take to make a hole in stainless, or can a hole saw make more than one hole in stainless.

Thanks for your opinions,
Lou

Re: KO punch

Use a very slow turning drill motor and cutting fluid (not cutting oil)and you will be surprised how many holes one hole saw will do.

Becareful though, one slip of the finger speeding up the saw will ruin it immediatly.

Re: KO punch

Hardworkingstiff, what I am refering to is called Rapid Tap and is what we always use when working on Stainless Steel enclosure projects.

In reality I guess it is a cutting oil but it is clear and much easier to work with as far as clean up and IMO seems to help the saw cut better than regular cutting oils.

Do a search for Rapid Tap

Re: KO punch

I recommend looking into Ebay and buy a used set. There are great deals there. I bought my 1/2' to 4" hydraulic KO set there and a 1/2" to 2" rachet KO set there and I have had no problems. I save about $1300 on the 4" set and $110 on the 2" set. Enerpac make a good set. Before I buy new I will always go there first.

Re: KO punch

My local supply house carries Current Tools. They look real nice. As good as Greenlee and some better.
I researched a PVC heater box for a while and found the Current model to be MUCH nicer than the Greenlee. In fact I was handling both models on the same day and was much more satisfied with the blue one than the green.
I also just recently purchased an offset kicker. The Current model is exactly the same as the new version of the Greenlee model.

Don't get me wrong, Greenlee makes top quality tools, but they are overpriced when purchased new. All I can see is larger shops buying $1000 KO sets. I know I can't handle that kind of hit unless a real large job permits it.
I got my ratchet set used as many people do.

I've done that before. Any local hydraulics shop will have you back in business in a day or so. I think I paid around 50 bucks to have mine rebuilt (or whatever it is that they do).
