Most likely, but you have to look at each application on a case-by-case basis. If you are marking a piece of equipment in an oily machine shop, chances are that Magic Marker isn't going to hold up for long. Also, equipment installed outdoors in sunny climates tends to lose the marking after a short time. That's why so many specifying engineers and POCO's require engraved labels on equipment. Some POCO's won't even connect you until you have an engraved label attached with screws or rivets.

I agree that this is the part that may confuse some. The sharpie is good for some environments, and not others. I do not think that using a sharpie on the metallic portion (cover) of an enclosure will last all that long in some environnments. It fades or will rub off (we have all tried to read those old markings). Permanent means permanent. A sharpie on the paper portion of a label or directory is permanent.
Notice it is supposed to be "legible" as well

Walmart sells an electronic label maker that has an available metalic tape that is listed for exterior use and uv resistant.Cost around $25.00 with the tape and batteries.We use it for anything that requires identification.From one roll of tape you can make 100`s of labels.
