Many years ago - I had this boss who had a full blown melt down because he saw me pick up a broom nearby and push some debris to the side so I could work at a panel.... (not even sweeping a portion of the floor - just the space infront of the panel.)

"If I ever see you with a broom in your hands again - you're sacked! I pay you way more than a janitor - you want an area cleaned - yell for a laborer to do it at $5 an hour..."

That said - Unless I'm alone in an end clients home on a service call - no broom...

And I have never dug a trench (outside of the military), and have no clue what one would do with a rake...

So what happens when there's no $5 laborers on the job? You just stand there and yell?

I once had a boss with the same attitude. I needed to install a panel tub that measured 21" wide. Steel studs were 16" OC. I just grabbed my cordless, undid a couple peanut screws, moved the stud, re-installed it, and went to work.

He climbed all over me for doing that. I politely reminded him I got the obsturction removed in about 30 seconds. If he wanted me to spend an hour walking the job looking for a framer, I'd be happy to waste his money.
