laptop size?

The pics in the other thread made me curious. How come alot of the laptops I see either in the field or in pictures are always 15". I am suprised that with the amount of numbers being entered and screen reolution requirements that there are not more 17" with the numpads already there.

Is it a cost issue? or just a preference for the smaller size?

I have a 17" and love it. Though I do notice the size quite alot when dragging it around.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Size matters---Bulky laptops are not fun to drag around however if you use it mostly as a desktop the larger ones would be fine.

I have a 15" Toughbook, you can drop it off a 20 Ft roof onto the parking lot and it is still garunteed to work , touchscreen, works great, would not want it any bigger, would not want anything else for field work.

i use a fujitsu 17" lifebook for the same reason. a 10 key pad is essential.
i can unplug it and drag it where i need to, if i need to. lately it's been
deskbound, and is growing roots.

truth be told, the lifebook sits on the corner of the desk, and the remote
screen plugged into it is a 26" lg flatron.

keyboard is a enermax usb 2.0 billet aluminum keyboard that is only
available online..... but it's thin, and cnc machined. i bought extras...
everyone who's used it wants one. i've gone thru 4 of them so far.

a couple of external drives, one firewire and one usb, round the "portable"
laptop out....
 
I use a laptop all the time. In my office at work I have a docking station with an external keyboard and a 22 inch monitor. At home I have a similar arrangement in my office and, with a good broadband connection and access to the company servers, I can work just as well from either location. As can Mrs B.
Which suits us just fine.
 
I use a 15.4" because it's easier to carry around. I just picked it up for $550 $60 or so for geek squad to do their thing. I recommend that. this one was 4g Ram and 320 hard drive. I wish it had built in blue tooth I had to buy and adapter for my PDA to communicate.
