will try to keep this short.......Went to a give an estimate to a potential customer....a house(residential) in the same neighborhood was under construction.....electrical contractor on job site....he had to redue a lot of his wiring due to theft of copper.....all of the panel wiring had been cut about 6 inches inside panel.....that was two (200 amp) panels...the inspector had given him permission to install a junction box in the attic and splice all conductors from j-box to panels......have any of you come across this and what thoughts about troubleshooting....

J-Box in attic is bad form, but not a violation if sized properly. Or should I say a matter of preference.

You can splice in the panelboard, if you don't fill the gutter or wiring space to more than 75%. 312.8

I would splice in the panel if room allows and the run is not cut up beyond that point.

Why would you even need the inspector's permission? This is a perfectly valid thing to do. Certainly no worse than turning an old panel into a j-box.

There is nothing wrong with splicing in the panel. Given the choice this is what I would do. If you ran conduit from the JB to the panel you may need multiple conduits to get past the derating issues.

I am doing a fire job for a residence and asked the inspector if I could put a tap box in the attic to replaced damaged cables. He told me I couldn't as it violates the accessible panel rule. I asked him how to solve the problem of romex stappled to the studs and he mentioned running MC cable. So is putting junction boxes or tap boxes in the attic of a residence a violation of NEC 314.29 or not?

No. There are millions of junction boxes in attics all over the place. Was it the JB that he was objecting to or something else?

I am bringing a Megger out to test the insulation. This job is in Miami and sometimes I have a hard time understand what the guy is saying over the phone. He offered to meet me at the sight when I do my inspection so I think I am going to take him up on that.

Juction in attic ok

Juction in attic ok

Have used junction in attic many time for fire damage and vandals. Only comment ever got from inspector was keep boxes up high in good sight above extra insulation that might be added later.
