Per code the laundry area can have more than one 12ovolt receptacle as long as it is within 6' of the laundry equipment. Can the second receptical, not the one being used for the washer, be switched?

Re: laundry area recept??

I'm having a hard time envisioning your situation.

What is the Code citation for the 6' spacing you are thinking of?

Take a look at 210.11(C)(2) and 210.52(F). If the switch is turning a laundry receptacle on and off, then, yes.

Re: laundry area recept??

Actually I am looking at the 1999 code hand book
that states the laundry circ. may not supply receptacles more than 6' from laundry. 210-10
page 128. I do not have a handbook for the recent code. the customer wants a switched recept in the laundry area. (to insure that equipment like an iron is not left on.)

Re: laundry area recept??

What the code requires is that you install at least one branch circuit for the laundry. You can have more than one branch circuit that serves the laundry. The branch circuit(s) that serve the laundry can have more than one receptacle outlet, but all the outlets on that circuit (those circuits) must be for the laundry (i.e., no other outlets).

You can certainly install an ?additional branch circuit? that serves receptacle outlets in the laundry room. You can certainly switch one or more of the receptacle outlets on the ?additional branch circuit.? I don?t have a 1999 Handbook, so I can?t look up your citation. But the code itself does not have any 6 foot requirement.

Re: laundry area recept??

There is a mention of a 6' rule in 210.8(7), this is in regard to having GFCI protection for a laundry receptacle with in 6' of a sink.

Re: laundry area recept??

My problem is that there is no other source to get power from other than the one laundry recept without tearing up walls and ceilings exstensivly. This is more like a laundry closet than an actual room.

Re: laundry area recept??

What's stopping you? Are you adding the receptacle outside of the laundry area? If not, you're ok. Use it. You can switch it, there's nothing that says you can't.

Re: laundry area recept??

Shelco,

I have the electronic version of the '99 handbook, so it doesn't have page numbers. You reference
the 1999 code hand book
that states the laundry circ. may not supply receptacles more than 6' from laundry. 210-10
page 128.
Is that Exhibit 210-10 or a typo?

I'm still looking.
