So IF ....you have a duplex recept. for the washer and dryer(gas)..is that device required to be GFCI protected...IF it is within 6'.

I do not believe there is an exception to 210.8(A)(7). The best I can tell, any receptacle within 6' of the laundry sink must be GFCI protected. This would mean either a "single" or "duplex" receptacle.
