Laundry on MWBC

I was doing demo today in preparation for a basement remodel, and I discovered the laundry was part of a MWBC (nothing else is on the laundry side of the circuit). I couldn't find anything in the code that prohibits this. I've never wired one that way, but I'm curious if it's legal.

There's no Code prohibition.

As a design consideration, I'd want to put something like a freezer or the furnace or something else that isn't carrying the luminaires in the home on the "other side". If luminaires are on the other side of the multiwire branch circuit, they'll pulse each cycle of the laundry motor(s).

I must admit, though, I've seen my share of MWBCs that have had luminaires on the "other side" of the branch circuit.

MWBC's are perfectly legal. Everyone seems to have an opinion as to whether or not they should be used. Personally with the cost of copper these days you would foolish not to use them whenever possible.

Especially now that 12/3 and 14/3 are less than twice the cost of 12/2 and 14/2, respectively.

Using MWBCs is SOP for us. It helps when the panel is fairly full and we're running out of spaces fot the eq grds & neutral connections.

As well as KO's.
