Reading the responses for laundry circuit needs, I see no one IRONS anymore! That's what the writers of the rule had in mind, powering the washer and the iron at the same time without blowing a fuse. It's an old rule. Washers do not need 20 amp circuits, that 1000 to 1750* watt iron sure does if it is not on a circuit by itself. ;)

Add in a gas dryer too which could use that 120V receptacle too. We have a house with a mother-in-law space within it and two laundry rooms. Previous owner wired things and there is one 20A circuit for the two laundry rooms, each of which also has a gas dryer. To two washers and two dryers on that circuit. It has not ever tripped even when both washers and dryers are being used. We don't iron down there though.
