I started in electrical work in 1972 when I got out of the Marine Corps. Got my licnese in 1987. Back then there was talk about our exam and license being good for all states. After all it is the National Electrical Code. It would be nice to be able to work in S.C. Tenn with my N.C. License. Are we any closer now? Also I really enjoy this group. Semper Fi.

This very topic was the subject of the cover story of the June EC&M. It basically said there is some support for national licensing, but it's a long way off.

The first step would be to at least get all the states to adopt statewide licensing. Some still do not. Not every state follows the NEC, and those that do don't all follow the same version.

Then there's the issue of license types and qualifications for those licenses. Some states have a huge array of types, while others have just a few.

And this is all before you factor in the political issues.
