In New Jersey you have to have a state license which requires passing three exams totalig 7 1/2 hours. The exams have a 10 to 22% pass rate. If you fail an exam you must wait 6 months to retake the exam. And take 34 hours of CEU's each code cycle. There are also seperate licenses that allow those without an electrical contractors license to install low voltage alarm work, low voltage sprinkler systems and communication wirring.
