The engineers here are a major benefit of coming here to Mike Holt's forum.

If we had nothing but electricians here we would be missing a huge part of this trade.

You ever try to do a job for one? No, we do not need six pages of specs for this ceiling fan installation. :D

So, the engineer gives one sentence, "Install ceiling fan". And the job comes out looking and performing poorly. Engineer asks, "What gives with this?"

Answer: Shrug, "Meets spec."

Hummm:roll:

Some I work with need 6 pages. Some need only a short conversation. A few, it wouldn't matter how many pages you wrote.

The ones that are a joy to work with, come up and say, "If you changed the way you said this, it would be a lot easier to put in and I think we would have a better job."

Tis truly a joy to work with a tech as a co-worker.

This has happened to me, and in more bizzare ways that I could ever imagine. Hence why my Technical Proposals tend to be ... good for bedtime reading.

It's simple. The more excrutiating detail one adds to a spec, the more likely one can find a way to blame someone else if it doesn't work. "But you didn't meet the requirements of article 4, section 3, paragraph 24, 3rd sentence."

:)

The large majority of the jobs I do have been designed by an Engineer and while they may have a lot of specs the sobering thing is the specs are there usually because at some point an EC had decided to take a short cut at a previous job.

They are no better or worse then we are, there are good ones, bad ones and ones that just don't care.

I mean in their own house where they practice their electrical skills. Try to tell them thatjust because it works does not make it right. Wow!

Stick to the engineering and let the electrician do the electricianing!

We always get a huge laugh when looking at an install and Mrs. Homeowner thinks it is going to some how bennifit them if she says " And my husband is an electrical engineer" as if we don't give them a super cheap price he will just come out and do the job in his spare time. No concept of what goes into the labor end of the job after the spec is written.

OH!

Well thats different from what I was thinking and in that case I see your point entirely.

For me that is like getting sent to work at the owners house.

oh-oh
Given your thoughts on me wiring my own house, you probably really aren't going to like me flying my experimental homebuilt over your house. :D Although if you're East of the Rockies, you're safe.

We get this every year, and it's coming soon.

Every year, some lucky crew ( ) gets to do the Xmas lights at the owners house.

I've dodged it since '96, but have a feeling it's my year....

GFIC's

GFIC's

Nothing says you cannot protect a switch in a potentialy wet location with a GFIC. Only 4 bucks this week at Menards! When I do installations in wet locations I ground fault protect everything!!
