Light Switches Near Showers

The old flip cover types are not listed as a switch cover, even though they do have a cut out in the foam for a toggle switch. They are a receptacle cover. You can use the style posted or an inuse cover that has the inserts for a switch. This became a big issue here awhile back mostly for well pump switches. An inspector found out that the older style flip covers were listed as receptacle covers and not listed for a toggle switch.

I just put one of those flip covers in as a disconnect for a garage door opener that is on a loading dock with a roof over it. It's protected from the weather so maybe it's ok.

Its not legal.

I think i've used a different style that was more flush with the surface, it came with a special recessed toggle, single pole or three way... that one was okay but it was all metal... so no real protection against shock, not like that plastic one a few posts up....

I have a bathroom with a 3 gang switch setup just outside the tub enclosure. I used some white nylon #6 screws from Ace hardware to attach the cover plate. I know I didn't have to, but it sure seems safer to me.

It is safer but not required

If the loading dock was indoors it would be fine but in 404.4 it specifically says if outdoors so it`s not ok to use that cover.Remember the single device flip covers are listed as receptacle covers and not switch covers.I thought it was silly since they come with a foam gasket that has provisions for a toggle but an inspector showed me that the UL listing was for a single receptacle outlet and not a switch...........
