I have switches (dimmers even) at both sides of my bed and the door coming in to bedroom, and one at the bathroom as well
More than one dimmer per load?

I have already had one customer have me block the little green light on the smoke detector, and the red light on the alarm keypad because the light kept them from sleeping.

Yes. Lutron makes dimmers that can work from multiple locations. You need a master dimmer for one location (in place of a 3-way) then remote dimmers for the rest of the locations, 3-way, 4-wayshttp://lutron.com/hlc/hallway.asp
I'm very familiar with home-automation. I wouldn't call such a system "three dimmers." Semantics.

....but NONE of them are required to be where they are ~ it is a design issue.

I would like to propose a change to the next NEC that all bathroom and bedroom lighting fixtures must be controlled by a switch with a lighted toggle. In fact, they should require all bedrooms to have a permanently mounted fixture, not just a switched wall outlet (switched wall outlets still OK in living rooms). These would be for safety, so people would not walk into a dark room and not be able to easily turn on a light. Also, many people don't necessarily put lamps where the switched outlet is, so this can potentially pose a safety hazard.

Jeff48356, responses to your illuminated switch proposal confirm the following quote by an unknown anthropologist: "One of the major characteristics distinguishing mankind from all other animals is the satisfaction we get from belittling another?s idea."

That's right. Laughing hyenas laugh with each other, not at each other. ;)

I guess we should all say:
Hey great idea!
Wish I'd a thunk of that.
All aboard the "Yes Man Express"

Reality being what it is, we call it as we see it.

BTW, did I just belittle you :D
