Than needed and why would you put it in the switch box? I would put it across the coil in the lighting contactor
I said in post #13 that 1.4A was a typo, and that I meant 1.4W for the power drawn if a 10K resistor was used. And that would result in only 12 mA of current draw, which is much less than the 0.5A needed.
I think drawing 0.5A and dissipating 60W in a resistor would be very wasteful no matter where you put it.
