I am trying to find information on Commercial lighting design. What are some of the common practices used in designing a lighting system?

Are there standards for computing which type of fixture to use? and how many fixtures to use in a sq.ft. area?

Any formulas, books, web sites, any information you could share, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

Yes, there are recommended practices and standards.
You start with the required/recommended level of illumination. If you are using any lighting calculation program, enter your layout and then the photometrics from the manufacturer. The program will produce some data:

Average illumination
Minimum/Maximum
Uniformity ratio [Avg/Min]

If the results are matching the requirements you are OK. If not change the wattage, luminaire locations, differnet luminaries etc.

By hand it is little cumbersome, but if you know more about lighting design you can get by.

Re: Lighting Design

kevinware, Don't forget to get with your local electric company and check out rebates if you put up high Effec. lighting. You can almost get new lights for free in some places. Pretty close.
