Before I was an EC I was running 5 Verizon wireless stores.
Are lighting packages were around $8000.00 to $10,000 dollars. The Ec that I worked for purchased these lights.
I bid a store awhile back and the lighting packages were over $55,000.
The GC said it was my obligation to buy the lights, but at the same time the customer knew how much the lights cost because they build stores all over the US and they don't want any mark up on them. I don't think that is fair.
I also don't like the Idea that I have to buy the lights, along with paying all the other Expense's as well.
How is it for you guys that do commercial work?
Do you purchase the lights?
Does the customer?
I'm bidding work anywhere from A $20,000 to $200,000.
$50,000 exceeds my credit lines as of now.

Whwen I buy lights I mark them up. If they don't like it then let them deal with the hassels. Either that or hid the cost somewhere else in your bid.

On all my jobs I supply the fixtures. I always put 15-20% ontop of the fixture package. You cannot sell them for your cost. You have other cost associated with the cost of the fixture. Such as higher liability premiums, handleing, storage. If the owner knows what they cost, let him buy and store them. I have 3 semi trailers full of fixtures onone job right now, there is no way I can sell them at cost.

Fixture packages. If we supply them, we have more time in them than the mark up is worth. But at least I can lamp them during install.

GC or owner supplied? Never come in a timely fashion and never with lamps. I guess we will take the markup.

BTW I'm doing a fixture take off as we speak. GC supplied, so why am I doing the take off???

I kinda' laugh when I see in a contract, "All extras are limited to 10% markup and profit."

Also, "EC is responsible for receiving, storing and protecting owner supplied materials. Any damage is the responsibility of the EC."

If I supply it, I mark it up. Most of the time with projects such as yours the owner will have a lighting package available from one distributor. You have to buy it from them but if you do not mark it up you are losing money.

My brother, when he was in business, did a Kohl's store. The contract read, "All extras are limited to 5% markup for profit and overhead." He had to state his hourly rate in the contract. So all extras took longer to perform. Nobody survives on 5%.

I typically use 5% overhead and 20% markup. I'm small and my overhead is low right now.
