Existing 7 story hospital has lightning protection, we build another 3 story building attach to this hospital, both buildings belong to the same owner. The new building will have hvac equipment on roof.

Do we need to provide lightning protection system for new building or it can be protected by old hospital lightning system because it is lower? What is about the hvac equipment on the new building roof, can they be protected by old hospital lightning system as well? Thank you!

There is no simple "yes or no" answer to these type of questions. it is likely / possible the higher roof area will protect portions of the lower section, but probably not all of the roof area. And yes, roof-top equipment must also be protected by the LPS.

Here in Florida, hospitals are required to have a LPS designed by a lcesned PE and installed by an approved contractor. I would strongly advise you consult a licensed PE / electrical engineer that is familar with LPS installations, the NFPA 780, and ANSI/UL 96...
