I do a lot of machine controls in plants mainly. If it is an outside or wet job I try to use fiberglass and/or plastic to keep corrosion ti a minimum.

I don't know for sure but doesn't metallic have a greater mechanical strength? Like resistance to crushing? If you pinch a non metalic and compromise the cable integrity it is usually a little harder to tell. The non metallic has more of a memory in the plasticity phase then the metallic does. Once your crush the metallic it stays mostly flat and a lot of the time it will short to the metal liner and cause a fault condition.

I probably just learned from some old timers that where set in their ways and it got drilled into me.

I agree with the memory part... and there is most certainly no grounded metal to cause any fault to ground in LFNC. Both aspects can be looked at as either a pro or con.

As to which has a greater crush resistance, I'm uncertain... but I do believe LFNC is pretty tough stuff for having no metal.

You can beat it with a hammer, drive over it, bend it back and forth several times with no problem. One touch with a sharp edge perpendicular to the length with any pressure on it and it will break into.

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration... even regarding the softer PVC part when stressed by bending it. I've been around it enough to know the possibility of that happening after installation will likely take an act of willful intent.
