live end feeds for track lighting

When I install track lighting, can I wire directly to the live end feed thus skipping the need for a box in the cieling and the unsightly canopy that covers it at the track end?

Re: live end feeds for track lighting

I know I've done that already when the end feed has a 1/2" knockout hole. It's darned tight in those fittings, though. In fact, I'd say that it was way too cramped for my liking. I'd be interested in others comments on this too. Wiring directly to the end fitting without a canopy is a cleaner way to connect it up, particularly in lay in ceiling installs. Something tells me that this is probably a 110.3(B) violation, though.

Isn't that what they are for? I have used plenty. No problems. Looks much better than a canopy type.

Re: live end feeds for track lighting

No. It would violate 300.14 and 314.16 and 410.10.

Unless someone knows something I don't?

I've done it too, but before I realized it was against code. Again, unless someone knows something I don't?

(Edit to add 300.14 to the list of violations.) :D

How could anyone possibly know something you don't? :(

George,

300.14 , has an exception.

314.16 , is for boxes.

410.11 , is for canopys and boxes.

I don't think any of these are relevant towards connecting to a track?
