Happy holidays everyone, I got a call from a customer about electrical violations, switches not working, etc. During the course of the job we found switches attached to cloth covered bell wire. Wires were traced to relays next to the panel that sent line voltage to the lighting. The worked seemed professionally done, but I have never seen or heard of this type of install before. I don't see the benefit either. Anyone heard of this install? It's in Waukegan Il, and all wiring run in emt.

Thanks Hank

low voltage relay switching? I wonder if that is/was the violation. How about a little more detail?

BTW- cloth braid low-voltage wiring... it would seem this may be older work, and in raceways. Is it old or new work?

Re: lo-voltage,relay,switching lights.

I would guess this work is around 40 to 50 years, the line wiring is cloth also. I first assumed when I pulled a switch that I was looking at some jury-rig. But this install was planned. Line voltage goes through a relay, to the light, and the switch turns relay on and off, using bell wire. New one to me.

Re: lo-voltage,relay,switching lights.

I'm sorry, you asked about the code issues, some of the violations were sloppy installations, kitchen counter was a nightmare,
overloaded circuits, panel not labeled, poor grounding, all kinds of good stuff.
