Locating a Main Panel on a Stair landing?

In a remodel I am working on the only logical place we can place the indoor main panel is on the outside wall which is also part of a basement stair landing. The outdoor meter entrance will be located approximately 24" above then dropped down through the wall in conduit. Does the NEC have anything in regards to locating a main panel on a stair landing wall?

I`ve looked but can`t find a referance to this in 2002 code,Is there working clearance???????

I agree with a.wayne. Make sure you have working clerance and proper OCD accessiblity. :)

Your inspector will probably use "working spaces" to fail you.

How would you install and/or protect the homeruns?

Could you install a disconnect and locat the panel in another location.

I can invision an application where you could do this, however I do not like it.

If and only if there was no other way and you could stand on the landing and work safely on the panel, I would use 90.2(C).
I mean 90.4.

The landing is approximately 4'x8' with plenty of clearance. It is four steps down from the main floor and four steps up from the basement floor.

As long as the landing provides the required work space in front of the panel there is no code section that can be cited to fail the installation.

Thank you for the replys. I think the only thing he can ding me on would then be the distance the meter is from the main panel, but I think I can bounce around that by encasing the mains in GRC to protect them from someone driving a nail through them to hang a picture.

Is there a light over the landing?
That might be something that could bite you too.

Spoek with the inspector and he required at least 3 feet of room in front of the main panel. He mentioned nothing about a light under the stairs. Bill how might that effect things?

You didn't mention what type of occupancy this was, but in a Dwelling unit a light would be required in the stairway per 210.70(A)(2) and also in a Basement near equipment requiring servicing per 210.70(A)(3).

And, 110.26(D) requires illumination be provided for working spaces about service equipment at 600V or less in all occupancies.

Bill this is basically a three story dwelling including the basement. The stair landing is located under the stairs that lead to the second floor and four steps down from the gound floor leading to the basement. It will be illumiated since it is it leads to their family room located in the basement.
