Re: Location of a disconnect in a building

Dtw, welcome to the forum.
One thing you will learn here is that the picture you have in your head of your specific installation may be hard for others to understand, so you will need to provide as much information as is possible or it will be hard to give you the appropriate answer - in short, we need more info :D

Re: Location of a disconnect in a building

230.70(A)(1) The service disconnecting means shall be installed at a readily accessible location either outside of a building or structure or inside nearest the point of entrance of the service conductors.

Re: Location of a disconnect in a building

Thank you Pierre. My situation is I am moving a meterbase.Where my service cable enters the building it will be 12 feet from the panel. My question is how soon (in feet) to install a form of disconnect. And also,do I bond the disconnect? :)

Re: Location of a disconnect in a building

DTW still not enough info.Is this extension underground,SER,pipe etc. local jurisdictions have what to say in this. Here after 5 ft. you`d need a disc outside if in pipe or ser and bond neutral there not afterwards.Underground then it would be an extended back to back no disc.required IE:bond the neutral at the primary panel in this case at first point of entry.

Re: Location of a disconnect in a building

I'm sure this is not the answer you want to hear but as Sam and AWayne mentioned it is "the shortest distance possible". Furthermore, it is subject to the interpretation of the AHJ.

To give you an example, I am currently working at a new residence with a 200 amp underground service. From the meter pan I ran approx. 10' underground, through the cinder block (just above the brick ledge) and into a 90 degree elbow tight to the block. Also, just below that conduit are the telephone and CATV conduits. In the same area, but higher, is the gas line and 8' below that are the water and sewer lines. Once inside, my interpretation was to keep the breaker panel away from the water and gas lines so I extended the conduit another 7' to the right making for a beautiful installation where the telephone and CATV would terminate to the left closer to the water line. The AHJ didn't think so and had me move the panel 3' to the left. I'm now 7" from the water line (running vertically at the side of the breaker panel), had to reroute the telephone and CATV lines up and overhead and the job now looks like it was done by a 1st year apprentice. So much for workmanship.

Long story short, if you're not sure, get an opinion from the AHJ before it costs you time and money to change it.

Re: Location of a disconnect in a building

Here we can call for an informational inspection. The AHJ`S wants and requirements after all they are the boss and I let them know that.Has helped me down the line too.
