Where does everyone locate the switch for the primary lighting of the bathroom? In our area it's been common practice for most to have this switch outside the bathroom. Typically the switch for the vainity light is outside the bath, and then any other switches are inside next to the vanity.

This came up in a pm conversation with another member.

I know that in NY, they seem to always be inside the room. I've probably heard this at least 100 times from customers over the years.

Personally I like them outside as I think it's convenient. But I know the flip side is the light getting shut off while you are in there.

It's really not that important, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

We've certainly discussed more trivial matters, I think.;)

Thanks for any thoughts.

Locating it just inside the room makes the most sense to me. That's always where I put it unless there's a good reason not to.

When I lived overseas I found them outside the rooms very often. Of course, we never ceased to amuse ourselves by turning out the lights while someone was taking a shower.

I can?t recall for certain, but I think that I have lived in, or at least traveled through, States that require, by law, that the switch be outside. They seem to perceive it to be a safety issue. The notion is that you shouldn?t have to enter a dark room, so it becomes no longer dark before you get inside.

For my part, I prefer the switch inside. But not for any reason stated yet. I prefer that a person go into the room, close the door, then turn on the light, and when ready to leave they should turn off the light before opening the door. I don?t want the bathroom light to be on my face, if I am not the one in the bathroom. ;)

Inside. Inside. Inside! Outside is like a cabin at Yosemite National Park. And if it's in your home it is probably un-American to do so.

This is a dumb discussion - so I'll jump in. The switch goes inside the room. The one exception is a closet or pantry or crawl space where I put a pilot light switch on the outside.

Please, let us not go down that path again. No more discussions about whether a switch comprises an "outlet."

John, this is evidently our NE tradition to put the main light sw. outside the bathroom. I've been at this for 40 yrs. not to often did we put them inside. My own house bath door swings in left on the right side of the bath entry is the linen closet, you would have to walki approx. 4' to get to the area where my fan-heat-light sw's are. The reason most have them inside is that they probably use pocket dorrs, such as they did when I worked inSo. Fla. For what all this is worth. Go RED SOX:grin: :D

Go easy bud as there are 1000s of bathroom light switches outside the bathroom and these are no cabins.

I grew up with the switch outside the bathroom and I do not recall having a problem with people coming along and shutting the light off.

One of my first rules of electricity is that:
If there a door, there will be a switch IN the room for the light/outlet in the room (with minor exceptions, changed on the fly)

That rule was overwhelming smashed to smithereens by some of our more brillant (and vocal :) ) colleagues.

But out in the wild, away from all the mensa members ...I RULE....

and my rule is simple: A switch in the room to be served.

Its good to be the boss. :)

Question though, if the switch must be in the same area as the light are all your outside lights controlled by switches located outside? ;) :D

When did outside become inside?

You gotta try a bit harder than that to catch me

Let's not forget, I reserved the right to change all my answers on the fly ;)
