While laying out receptacles for condos I come to a space such as a foyer or 5 foot wide hallway that has wall space over 2 feet long. If the owner wanted to put a table or lamp in the hallway or foyer do I have to provide an outlet on these spaces or is the code referring only to "rooms" and not hallways or foyers?

Re: Location of Duplex Receptacles in condos

210.52 (H) Has requirements for hallways. I would put a foyer in that category as it is not a "Room".

Re: Location of Duplex Receptacles in condos

I believe hallways are not *required* to have a receptacel in less they are over 13 feet long...so, by the minimum requirements of the Code, this hallway would not require a receptacle.

Re: Location of Duplex Receptacles in condos

Note that is for the code 'minimum' requirement. I was always taught that a job done strictly to the code minimum was a lousy installation. Throw in the extra receptacle. That way it's there if they want to use it, cus it's a helluva lot easier to do it before the rock is up, than after.

Great comment Paul. The only problem is the additional cost of the extra outlet. In my opinion, the lack of the requirement of that receptacle should be brought to the attention of the person that is paying the bill and let them make the decision. If they don't want to pay for it, why go to the expense of installing one? In my opinion, installing extras without compensation bites. :D

Re: Location of Duplex Receptacles in condos

Yeah, I'd put one in...like peole have said, it's easier to do it now then later.

Re: Location of Duplex Receptacles in condos

You have the same problem in a garage: code only requires one receptacle. And we have a few builders that wan't us to stick to bare code minimum. But I know if I was having this house built I would wan't more then the code minimum's so I ask the home owner and leave it up to them.

Re: Location of Duplex Receptacles in condos

I agree with putting it in. But mostly I agree with Charlie. Somebody has to pay for it. I don't want to, I'll never use it. Change orders are easy though. :)

Great comment, that is also one of the problems with making Code changes. If it is safety related, how many lives does it save or is it just a good idea? If it is just nice to have, it is a design issue and has no place in the Code. There are times when it is really tough to draw that line. Even the panel members have to be reminded that the Code is a set of minimum standards. :D

Re: Location of Duplex Receptacles in condos

I have to take issue with code changes Charlie. We mull over these codes every day. Code after code. I don't beleive it's really all that hard to change a code to improve it's readability. I'm sure there's a lot of inertia, but I dought it's all that hard. :)
