Has anyone out there ever wired a log home before?I have a good friend who has asked me to wire one for him and I was looking for a few good tips on running romex and cutting in boxes in the logs. Most people I have talked to have told me that I should choose my friends more wisely next time.HAHA!.Is there a good site to view wiring examples? Thanks, Wayne

Re: Log house wiring

Wayne I have wired a log home, drop me a private email with any questions when I have a second I will send you a few of my ideas.

Re: Log house wiring

Did one long ago, I think in the first year of my apprenticeship. The rather innovative design solution was to surface mount everything in IMC (I think, this was a while back), then pull it down, have it plated, and re-install. What would have otherwise been an eyesore became part of the decor.

For the record...that's not the economy option.

Re: Log house wiring

Wayne;

In addition to doing electrical work I do wood work this helped with the installation.

First of all this was the bosses brother house, so I was volunteered.
I was onsite as the house went up and utilizing drill bits and drill bit extensions I drilled the logs for the branch circuit wiring. Prior to pulling and wiring I had made a jig for single gang, two gang and three gang boxes, using my router I cut flat surfaces on the logs for the face plates. Then utilizing a electric chain saw cut the boxes out then fished the wires in.

There was a basement, so we could set junction boxes keeping the number of cables pulled into the switches down to a minimum. The outlets in all but the kitchen and bathroom were mounted in a box chase (approximately 3" wide X 8" high) this was part of the design from the house manufacture.

I had a chandelier that was mounted in the center of a 24X24 family room with a cathedral ceiling,
using the drill bits I tried to get dead center of the room br drilling the ridge log. missed by 6". Hardly noticeable to all but me..............and MY BOSS.

The drilling of the logs was verified as OK by the log manufacture and the AHJ.

Re: Log house wiring

Thanks Brian, I like the idea of using junction boxes in the basement. This will save a lot of the headache of concealing wires in the chinking. The first big issue that I have come across is a chandolier that will be in the great room as you walk in the front door.The construction on the inside is post and beam and the walls are already predrilled(kit house).I plan on running the wires for the chand. up through the roof and using emt to conceal and protect them under 6 in. of insulation and metal roofing.I think I can bend a 90 on both ends on the emt and get near the location, but I will have to be very accurate when drilling through the roof because I need to come through a rafter as close to the truss as possible so the wires won't show.This is going to be a real challenge but thats what I like about this.Do you think I should use rigid in the application or maybe even use 3/4 greenfill.

Re: Log house wiring

Since it's just one run I'd personally use RMC. It would be a nightmare if the EMT got compromised.
