I always use a mouse/piston, so you will hear the vacuum change pitch when the mouse/piston arrives, but I also squeeze the vacuum hose and that will stop the mouse/piston from entering the vacuum...

You may have figured out how to get the string through but next time for laying the conduit if you don't alredy know , put it together on the ground next to the ditch then lay it in all at once exept for the 90 degree angles.

On EMT runs over 150ft i put a quick rap of duck tape around each coupling
and use any good shop vac to suck them in,on the bigger pipe i just tape the hose to the pipe to make a seal and at the other end any lite plastic bag tied and taped to a piece of jet line, you dont need all that fancy stuff,a 280ft run of pvc would take about 40 seconds to suck that in once the vac was fired up.
I have used my Dewalt cordless vac out in the middle of no where to suck in a 200ft run of 1"works great.

That tow behind air compressor will shoot water out of a 1" conduit run from 1 parking lot pole base to the next 20' in the air. Just in case you run into a shopping center pole base job and wander how to get from 1 pole to the next. Those poles can get to be pretty far between.
